Bike Accessories – What I Started Out With

Even before I bought my new bike I had accessories.  When I first started riding, I rode my son’s mountain bike.

The most important accessory is the bike helmet.  It is really important to wear one of these lovely things.  It does great things for your hair.

After riding for a few days I realized that I wasn’t very good at turning around to see if cars were coming.  What happened was that as I turned, so did the bike.  That’s not good when you are trying to stay by the side of the road.  And if a car is actually there, that really isn’t good.

At the bike store (my new favorite place to hang out), we found a mirror to attach to the helmet in the discount bin.

This little mirror actually works great.  I can see cars coming from behind without turning around.  It does look a little geeky but then when you see all the stuff I have with me and what I’m wearing then having a little mirror on my helmet just completes the package.

My cell phone was another important thing to have with me.  I want to be able to call someone if I get a flat tire.  🙂  I have never changed a bike tire and I’m not ready to learn to do it.  There might also be an occasion that something happens and I get hurt and I might need to call someone.

As I look at all my accessories I realize that most of them are for helping to keep me safe.

The last accessory I started out with was a pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses are not only important for blocking out the sun but also for keeping bugs out of your eyes.  At first I used my driving sunglasses but they fit a little too close to my face and the air couldn’t flow around them freely and my face got extra sweaty.  So I got a different pair.  I went to my favorite sunglasses store…Walmart.  But not just any sunglasses in Walmart will do.  You have to go to the back to find the polarized fishing sunglasses.

These cut down the glare from the sun and they are cheap.  $14.95.  What a deal!

I rode with just these few accessories and a water bottle for a couple of weeks.  But it became apparent that I needed more.
